How to re-pot marginal plants

This should be carried out between the months of April and September, when the plants are in their growing season.

  1. Line your plant basket with hessian to prevent pond plant compost from being washed out. Then half fill the basket with aquatic compost.

  2. Trim off excess root growth (this encourages new root growth) and also trim off two-thirds of the foliage. Plant 3 plants per 5 litre pond plant basket.

  3. Top up the basket with pond plant compost and firm in the plants to within 2cm of the top of the pot.

  4. Place a layer of washed pea gravel on top of the compost to prevent the compost from being disturbed once in the pond.

  5. Trim any excess hessian.

  6. Now the weird part! Water the plant well BEFORE you place it in the pond. This drives out any air in the compost and allows it to settle, preventing clouds of compost being blown out of the pot by escaping air when it is submerged in the pond.
