How to plant pond oxygenator plants.
If you're replanting using mature plants from your pond, remove each plant from the pond, ensuring there are elements of new growth. If you're planting new plants start at point 3.
Trim the plants back to 15cm long pieces with new growth tips at the top. Then tie the bases together in bunches of 4 or 5 with garden string.
Plant the bunches into pond plant compost. If your basket has large holes, ensure you line the basket with hessian to prevent the compost being washed out.
'Top dress' the pot with a thick 3cm to 4cm layer of washed pea gravel.
Water the basket well, ensuring it gets a good soaking. The reason for this is to drive out any air pockets in the compost that would otherwise bubble out when the pot is placed in the pool, causing the compost and plants to be lifted out of the pot.
In a few weeks the plants will have rooted and sprouted vigorous new growth that will help to keep your pond healthy.
- Repeat the task when the plant once again becomes ungainly.
